I’ve never donated blood before, despite the regular blood donation drives occurring in school. It isn’t because I’m averse to the idea – on the contrary, I think it’s an easy thing I could do that may potentially save someone’s life. I guess I’ve just never felt a huge impetus to do so, since my blood type is A+, not a valuable and scarce universal donor type.
Of course, beyond the usual donation drives in school, making time to donate blood seemed like an inconvenience. So I was curious when I saw a blood donation centre open in Dhoby Ghaut, right next to the MRT. Dhoby Ghaut is one of my favorite hangout areas in Singapore. Looks like there isn’t any more reason not to donate blood!
So I did, yesterday. I had a couple of hours to spare between lunch out and a movie tonight, so why not?
It was surprisingly easy. A quick questionnaire and check up, followed by a finger prick blood test, then the actual donation. The needle was less painful than I expected, and I got a pretty cute bandage to show for it. I even got some reading done while the blood was pumping.
Next time you’re around town and have a couple of hours to spare, why not head down to the Blood Bank at Dhoby Ghaut?
